He asked if he and Stefano Cardoselli could do a stroy using a character from the Brom Kah universe. Vespero, the occult inspector. That is when I first saw Stefano's work, and from that point I was hooked like a crazed infected junkie. His art speaks to me like very few can do. He ranks amongst my favorite artists of all time and is a constant inspiration and motivation to me and my work. As a regular contributor to Heavy Metal Magazine to Blue Water Productions, and with many small press comics on his resume, I can say with great pleasure that every issue of Brom Kah will contain an eight page continuous story of Vespero that takes place in the filthy city of Port Grey Tide.

Stephen Nelson has scripted a dark, twisted tale that really captures the city of Port Grey Tide and its occupants. It will grab you by your face and plunge its thumbs deep into your sockets, ripping your eyes out and plugging you into the depths of Port Grey Tide.

Here is the first two pages of Stephen Nelson and Stefano Cardoselli's story, Brom Kah: Children of Pallut N' Roone. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do.

Brom Kah: Children of Pallut N' Roone
Story: Stephen Nelson
Pencil and ink: Stefano Cardoselli
Colors: Laura Ruggeri

Brom Kah page 7

<img style="display:block; After Keith and I finished the ashcan this past summer we sat down and hashed out the future of Brom Kah. Until next time, stay tuned. -Garrett

Brom Kah : Shades Of Thyme

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ruV1Z1UDZw4/S3mvPAHeE-I/AAAAAAAAAfc/GUkMRshgb10/s320/BromSOTpg1web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438570697290814434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ruV1Z1UDZw4/S3mvO5A4fSI/AAAAAAAAAfU/gjOpvBqCvrc/s320/BromSOTpg3web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438570695384136994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ruV1Z1UDZw4/S3mvOVY7SjI/AAAAAAAAAfM/PcIDrhK9XbM/s320/BromSOTpg5web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438570685821307442" />
Brom Kah : Shades Of Thyme is a 6 page short story written and drawn by Jose Holder that will be featured in the Brom Kah anthology. Imagine yourself a wee village boy, ignorant of the world, dressed only in a scarlet loincloth, listening to a stranger tell you a strange tale of a distant past....

Or just read the chapter. Whatever works.

----

BROM KAH, THE BEGINNING

CHAPTER TWO - THE DEATH RIDERS

Know that this story begins long before you were born – perhaps before your father was born. And perhaps even his father would not know it; but his father – if he lives still in your village – he would know it. But someday he will die or worse, forget, in which case it is a story that will be lost to time.

Know that this land was once ruled by men who do not rule it now. These warriors were not of our people; they came from Away, past the distant forests that our people do not penetrate and the seas we have heard of but shall never see.

These men were called the Death Riders, and their steeds were swift and terrible and their blades were forged in a metal from their native place, smelted from an ore they called the Blood Stone. They fashioned this metal into daggers, and each warrior carried two, with no other weapon or armor to protect them. And armed only with two blades and a single horse, a lone Death Rider would bring both relentless order and unending misery to the fiefdom he controlled.

Know that the Death Riders had one leader— their King; their Kah. And for as terrible as his warriors were, he was twice as brutal. So sickened was he by the very land he controlled that he would not set foot upon it; he traveled on horseback and slept on animal skins and never, ever touched the soil.

The Death Riders were enchanted with dark magics that prevented the creeping tide of age. It was the only way to survive the long, long journey from their land to our own. But so great were these magics that no mere female was allowed them, and so women could not travel on the warriors’ boats when they left the homeland port and be expected to survive. But since the Death Rider King knew that he would need to take a wife while ruling over foreign ground, he’d brought with him on his voyage a newborn female baby – ripped from the arms of the fairest woman of his native kingdom.

When the girl came of age and bled as women bleed, the King took her savagely in her chambers each night until her belly grew with child. But this offspring was a boy, and as soon as he was cut from his mother’s womb the King rose with fury and threw him overboard, feeding him to the dusky waves of that strange sea.

He took the girl a second time, and this time she birthed a little girl of her own. The King was satisfied, and held the child aloft with pride even as the young mother died – for the perils of sailing those morbid waters sapped the life of the unenchanted at an age in which you and I would still be young and vital.

The newborn girl herself came of age, and again the King forced himself upon her. And again, the male progeny she birthed was killed on sight until another girl was reared.

And so it went for daughter after daughter, while the warrior ship made slow passage through the dark and seamless tides. When the vessel, timeless moons later, reached our own shores the King rode his horse down the gangplank carrying the seventh such infant girl borne of his own treachery. And this girl, when she grew, would finally be his queen.

As the child aged, the King sought out teachers for her from among our peoples. So loathsome did he deem his choices that eventually he reached out to the farthest and most arcane sects of his empire, until he found the Witches of the Mountains.

Their name is lost on you? Listen close. These witches were not misshapen hags, but a community of druidic women who claimed oneness with the Earth itself. In their power the King saw one of our land’s few threats, and so he wished to gain their tutelage before bringing them to dust. He bequeathed his young queen to them with strict orders that she return to him when she grew into a woman.

And so the girl grew up sequestered in the mountains. She learned the ways of the mountain witches – their rites, their rituals, their command of the natural order. She learned of the twisted links between life and death, and the sensual forms of flora and of fauna.

And when the girl reached eighteen, and prepared to become a sister of the Witchhood of the Mountains – these witches who had long forgotten the strange and stinking savage who’d brought her to them years before, claiming ownership over land that none could own – when she reached the strange and tenuous bridge between child and woman – it was then that the Death Riders came for her, and rendered no small genocide in their wake.

Thus was the girl now returned to her rightful King, tethered with a coil of rope to the saddle of the King’s most callous Death Rider and dragged through dirt and mud while she screamed and screamed and screamed as flame and axe tore her mountain home asunder.

The Death Rider assigned with the task of her safe return was not one of the King’s most trusted men, but he was most brutal, and thus was he called Brom – and, as his king’s servant, Brom Kah. But while Kah had only one meaning in accordance with their warrior-speak, Brom meant many things. Brom was inner fierceness. Brom was the enemy’s blood, when spilled. Brom, most importantly, was brother.

Brom and his King were not brothers of the same womb; nor did the King call him such out of some sense of deeper kinship. Brom in this case was meant only as acknowledgment for the warrior’s cold taste for violence – but Brom himself saw more in it. He saw the King as kin, as equal – and that idea made him bold.

Each Death Rider ruled his territory as he saw fit, and took from it what he desired without owing tribute to their king. It was enough that they fought together as necessary when called upon, and did their masters bdding when asked. In this way each man’s greed was his own, and resentment in the ranks – which might lead to mutiny – kept at bay.

There was but one rule: like their king, no Death Rider could marry women of our people. To use for sport and cast aside was one thing, but to love was forbidden. For most Riders, their hatred of outsiders was so great that the rule was easy to abide by. But in Brom stoked a fire of rebellion and self-righteousness. He would take that which he could not have if only because it was denied him.

So Brom Kah, the Death Rider, took from his slaves a young bride. He told himself he loved her and kept their marriage secret, save one symbol: a lock of her hair woven into his horse’s saddle.

That same saddle carried him on the day he brought to ruin the Witches in the Mountains, and held him still as he rode back to his King with the King’s young queen in tow. Each night on this return trip he would stop to make camp, neither feeding the girl or loosening her bonds. The ride took near a month, and as they traveled the girl’s wrists rubbed raw and bloody against her ropes, and she fell sick from thirst and hunger. In her fever, rage and sadness swam behind her eyes looking for anchorage, and found itself again and again focused on the vile brute that dragged her unrelenting toward her betrothed.

And because she was not just a queen but also a Witch’s Child, she felt the true nature of everything she saw. Her vision showed her nothing but repellent, soulless selfishness in her captor, save one small presence of something else. In the scorching sunlight, trudging wearily behind Brom’s horse, the young queen’s eyes lit upon the hair woven into his saddle, and in an instant she knew that it belonged to a woman of our people. She knew what that woman represented to the scoundrel who’d kidnapped her, and she knew this information was at once precious, deadly and secret. And she stared with cold fire at her captor and vowed to herself that this small, trifling lock of hair would be the death of him.

Heedless of this crucial shift in his own destiny, Brom Kah brought the Witch Queen through swamp and fog and jungle glade until they reached their King. And in his presence the Queen lost all her power and could do naught but acquiesce. Whether by the force of his will or her own exhaustion, she collapsed upon the ground before him. In this, their bond was sealed.

Soon the pair was wed, and in their marriage a weird seclusion cocooned itself round man and wife. If they shared power, or wealth, or love, no man can know.

Within the year, the King was dead.

to be continued in part three - THE TINKERERS

BROM KAH Series Bible - part one

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ruV1Z1UDZw4/S1XQJcXw31I/AAAAAAAAAek/fU5xpGsUi7c/s320/Skullweb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428473786518265682" />
Hey folks -

Keith here. Garrett allowed me access in order to repost the story I've been working on to get us started together on Brom Kah.

A little background: I was introduced to Garrett through our Terminal Press publisher, Brian Ferrara, when we were paired up to work on Rob Dukes' I AM BECOME GOD (out this week! *plug plug*.) I knew of Garrett's work from CANDY STRIPERS, and Brian had mentioned to me some time ago that Garrett was itching to draw "a barbarian book," but he didn't explain that Garrett actually had an entire world fleshed out.

When I came on to write for BK, there was so much preexisting material that I felt I had to "write my way in" in order to be comfortable moving forward. Using extensive notes from Garrett, I came up with a 5-chapter story introducing Brom Kah in a way that made sense to me.

We're going to starting posting the story here, and now seems as good a time as any with the Brom Kah contest going on. If you're curious about exactly what on earth you're getting on board with by submitting to us, keep checking back for more updates.

Without further ado:

----

BROM KAH, THE BEGINNING

CHAPTER ONE - LABYRINTHS

The cave, like most caves, had sat above the village on the cliffs for far longer than anyone who lived in the village could remember. It was moulded into the mountainside so invisibly that one would assume it had existed for as long as the mountain had existed, and no resident of the village had lived long enough to prove otherwise.

Each morning, a small gangling village boy lugged a pair of wooden pails up the mountain to a well which connected to an underground stream that broke the surface at just that spot. It was a strange spot for a well, but this was in the time before men had learned to make tools for digging through rock to find their own wells, and so they made due with what nature provided.

And so it was on one particular morning that the village boy was lugging his pails up the mountain, his eyes still heavy and his brain still foggy from sleep. He hauled the pails past the dusty, lonely cave and on up to the well, where he filled them one at a time, his wiry limbs straining against their weight.

And when he finally finished and began to drag the pails back down to the village, he stopped.

Because an old man was standing in front of the cave which had seen no visitors in the boy’s entire lifetime.

The old man was as dusty and as cragged as the cave itself – thin to his bones and wearing, strangely, the same scarlet loincloth normally given to the young boys of the village to wear until they passed their Trials and came of age. The man was so small and fragile that the loincloth hung more loosely on his frame than did the boy’s own. He leaned on a gnarled staff and his long, unruly grey hair ruffled round his weathered scalp in a confusion with his own billowing whiskers and beard.

And he was blinking, blinking at the sun and sky and land as if he’d never seen another, and his skin was as pale as if he were the walking dead.

The boy stood away, watching and cautious, as the old man stretched his limbs fit to break them. And the old man turned and saw him then, and in a voice like cracked stone asked if the boy might spare some of his water.

The boy did, still cautious, and the man sat and drank and drank. And when he’d drank it all he returned the pail, and the boy left to the well to fill it again. The boy was confused and unused to new things and new people, and considered leaving this stranger to his cave and running back to the village. But he dragged his feet as he passed the cave again, and the man called to him.

The call was wordless – merely a beckoning sound – and when the boy turned, the man gestured for him to sit. And so, with a strange intoxicating curiosity that he’d never felt before, the boy sat.

The man said nothing for a long time. Then, as if he’d known the boy forever and was continuing a conversation begun just moments prior, he said:

“I entered that cave a long time ago.

“I entered it after someone told me a story about what was inside, but the story had no end and so I entered into the cave to find the end myself. And though I found more of the story, I could not find the end and so I came back out, and now I will tell you what I know and hope that you will take more from it than I was ever able.”

The man paused, and breathed, and listened to the wind.

“Now I will tell you the story of Brom Kah.”

-----

to be continued in part two: THE DEATH RIDERS

BROM KAH Contest!

That's right boils and ghouls! Color is OPTIONAL. If you have more than 4 pages, bring 'em on. 4 is the MINIMUM. The story MUST center around one of the main characters, other than that the ball is in your court. You can create your own monsters and characters to tell your tale.

For all background history on the world or the characters themselves please feel free to contact me. Send all questions and submissions to: g.eisenheim@gmail.com

I also thought I would post a lump sum of various sketches and concept art to get your juices flowing. Stay tunned for more updates.

best, and good luck.
~Garrett

Zombie Boom!

All hail Brom Kah! Mr. Street will also be featured in the anthology with his zombie short story, so don't miss this book! BROM KAH! This happens to be one of the most important pieces for me. Mostly because The Crow is the Holy Grail of comics in my eyes, there is no other book out there that a sole artist has put that much passion and sorrow into each page. Taking nearly a decade to complete and being first printed with a small press company, no one knew it would become the huge hit that it became. James will be forever one of my favorite artists of all time, and I'm honored to be able to share such a piece with all of you. Enjoy Brom Kah as only James O' Barr can bring you. -Garrett

Derek Laufman

From the brilliant mind of Derek Laufman comes this vivid and striking pin up of our hero Brom Kah! When I first worked on this character I was really torn on what colors that I thought he would wear so I asked my good friend for help. Not only is Adam the colorist for the book but he is one of my biggest inspirations on this project, and when I was dumbfounded I asked him for his superb advice. I mean, he is the colorist for christ sake. Whom better to ask? We both agreed on keeping his mask antique white so that it would be a great contrast with all the heavy blacks and shadows Im using, from there he picked my brain a little and the rest is history. Pencils by myself and colors by Adam Street. -Garrett

Wesley Bernick

Wesley Bernick, cartoonist superb dropped the ball on me late last night. He has assaulted these four pages with an onslaught that can not be denied. Each page filled with foot notes and visions as only he can deliver. Based off the collections of paintings and illustrations done by myself, he has dove deep into the world of our hero. Giving us four sketch pages for the Art of Brom Kah book that I'm currently putting together. It has been a real pleasure working with Jose, he is an amazing artist. A full time graphic artist for a small sign and craft shop. We had hit it off as soon as we started talking. We began working on some smaller projects together when we had the spare time, feeding off each others work and energy. After a short while he decided to blow me away with his rendition of Brom Kah, and boy was it breath taking. I had to take a step back for moment. Though we have completely different styles when it comes to art we both have a lot of similar ground. He is a phenomenal colorist and is at the top of his game when it comes to illustration. He has worked on a slew of titles that include Marvel Adventures Spiderman, Wolverine, Marvel Presents, Marvel Adventures Hulk, Fangoria, G.I. Joe, Cable & Deadpool and more. These are just a few of the books you can pick up to see his touch of grace. He has illustrated poster pin ups for the publisher Terminal Press on their Hard Core series and now he has lent his hand to produce the first promo poster for Brom Kah! When it comes to women Adam Street draws them better than the rest. Enjoy everyone, for you will be able to bare witness his beautiful colors across each page of my book Brom Kah!

You can find more of his work here: http://greasystreet.blogspot.com/

-Garrett

Jose Holder

Jose Holder's Elsa Bloodstone story just hit the shelves in Marvel Assistant Sized Spectacular 2 and he is showing no mercy when it comes to illustrating some of the most dynamic visions of Brom Kah! I decided to create a full multi media experience with no hold bar action. Im working on putting together a collection of pin ups and concept art by various artists for the ultimate coffee table book that will not only showcase the fantastic world of Brom Kah but it will aslo promote and push fellow artists in the industry.
